Cabo Blanco National Park

Cabo Blanco National Park, Costa Rica.

Cabo Blanco is located inside the Tropic Humid Forest life area. Here you can notice the always-green species. Some of these are the "indio desnudo", "el guácimo", "el chaperno" etc.

It is located in the Province of Puntarenas, in the south part of the Peninsula of Nicoya. Executive Decree No. 10 created the park on October 21, 1963. It has an extension of 1.172 hectares in the land part and 1.790 hectares in the sea part.

Cabo Blanco is a refuge for the species of flora and wild life of the dry pacific and for the big amount of sea species. It is very important for its beauty.

In the areas of primary forest, you can notice the "Pochote" and the "Espavel". It has been reported over 119 tree species.

There are not many faunas present in the reserve. Anyhow, you can find mammal like the deers, white face monkeys, congos, porcupines, etc. But you can find so many sea and land birds.

Inside the sea environments is possible to observe a great amount of fish, crabs, lobsters, shrimps, clams an other species.

There are 4 programs to manage the reserve. The Program of Investigation propose de develop the investigation as establish and execute the measures to control and supervise.

The Maintenance Program, which was establish for the improvement and construction of equipment inside the reserve.

The Protection Program avoid illicit actions inside the reserve as the hunt, fishing, fire and any other extraction of forest products.

The Environment Education Program supports the community relationships to create a favorable atmosphere between the people living near the reserve. Also watch for the attention of the national and foreign tourists.

Park Attractions

The Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve protects tropical forest and beach areas at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica.

The San Miguel Biological Station of Costa Rica was developed to promote and support teaching, research, and environmental education, taking advantage of the well-protected tropical marine and dry forest habitats present on site.

 

Park Facilities and Hours

There are trails that lead between the Administration Station and Playa Cabo Blanco, and Playa Balsitas and the San Miguel Station. Potable water and restrooms at both stations, picnic areas and showers at Playa Cabo Blanco.  Camping permits are limited.

Facilities at the San Miguel Biological Station include classrooms, laboratories and a reference library. Bunkbed lodging with electricity, shared rooms and baths is available for groups up to 30. For more information contact 645-5277 or 645-5890.
